The Mandalorian Season 2: First Look!

The official trailer for The Mandalorian season 2 has been released! Mando and the Child return in the epic series that everyone has been waiting for. Disney+ dropped the first trailer and announced the return date of October 30, 2020. Let’s take a look at the trailer and then we’ll give our best breakdown.

Season 2 is all about growing the scale of The Mandalorian’s universe. The trailer begins with a repeat of the exchange between Mando and the Armorer at the end of season one. The Armorer instructs her fellow Mandalorian to head out in search of the Jedi (enemy sorcerers) so that Baby Yoda can be with his own people. We see the Razor Crest in its tattered condition heading towards an unknown planet. It wasn’t damaged in the season one finale, so we can assume a space battle took place where Mando and Baby Yoda barely manage to escape. We see them walking through an rundown, graffiti covered town we have never seen before. Could it be the Smugglers Moon? That would be amazing. It also looks like they’ll be returning to Tatooine and possibly venturing to snowy Ilum.

As Din Djarin and Baby Yoda stroll into a busy port town, they’re pursued by a mysterious character in a dark cloak. Although the identity of this figure remains unknown, we think the actress is WWE wrestler Sasha Banks. Din Djarin and Baby Yoda find themselves travelling by boat, which is something new in a world full of speeders and spaceships. The duo could be sailing by boat due to the beat up Razor Crest seen at the beginning of the trailer. In The Mandalorian‘s second season, the New Republic and Din Djarin have apparently come to somewhat of an understanding, as one trailer scene reveals the Razor Crest flanked by a pair of X-Wings. Djarin doesn’t seem worried by their presence, so we can assume the two sides are working together. It’s possible that in his desperation to evade the Empire, Djarin calls upon the authorities.

A handful of TIE fighters are shown, as well as Stormtroopers on speeder bikes pursuing Mando over a rocky cliff face. But perhaps the most interesting moment shot is of Stormtroopers running through a hallway. Does this scene take place on Starkiller Base? Or in the Star Destroyer Giancarlo Esposito recently hinted at? Could it even be possible that these villains are no longer the dying embers of the Empire, but the emerging spark of the First Order? This trailer leaves room for so many possibilities!

In the next shot, Din Djarin appears to be trapped in a cage underwater, and he appears to be drowning. The clip is a quick one, but interesting nonetheless. Does it take place in the boat referenced earlier and if Mando is trapped, where is Baby Yoda? It seems natural to worry about the little nuggets safety and whereabouts. Has he been captured, with his protector left to drown? If the trailer is sequentially accurate than we need not worry. Din Djarin is seen using the jetpack he gained in the finale of season 1 as he rockets off a cliff during the previously mentioned Stormtrooper chase.

One of the more confusing snippets in The Mandalorian‘s season 2 trailer shows Mando fire at a mystery figure strung up on a streetlight. It looks to take place in the new location seen earlier of an urban, graffiti-covered world. This is most likely where Din and Baby Yoda attend the boxing match. Mando appears to have a man, perhaps Gore Keresh, tied up. He shoots at the lamp above and sparks fall. We are left to our devices as to what is happening in the scene. Maybe the bounty hunter is trying to get information as to who alerted the crowd of Baby Yoda’s value.

In the final scene of the trailer, Din Djarin and Baby Yoda find themselves at a boxing match between two Gamorreans. Members of the crowd start showing interest in The Child, proving once again that nowhere is safe. Looking for a fight, the crowd descends on Mando, who reacts by opening his whistling bird missiles. Reading the room, Baby Yoda wisely closes his capsule and hunkers down until the fight is over. Comedic moments like this prove why everyone fell in love with the character in the first place, and Mandos victory over the villains prove why he is the only one who can save the Child. After all, this is the way. Yes, I have been waiting this whole time to say that.

The new pics came Tuesday via Entertainment Weekly, showing Baby Yoda with his protector (Pedro Pascal) in his satchel/makeshift baby carrier. Mercenary Cara Dune who helped Mando save a village from raiders on the planet Sorgan, and leader of the bounty hunter guild Greef Karga are returning to the new season. Many other characters featured in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels, including Ahsoka Tano, Captain Rex, Sabine Wren, and more are rumored to be featured. Though we don’t get a glimpse or confirmation of any new characters, we are excited for the possibilities.

“The new season is about introducing a larger story in the world,” showrunner Jon Favreau told Entertainment Weekly. “The stories become less isolated, yet each episode has its own flavor, and hopefully we’re bringing a lot more scope to the show.” Let me just say how much I love Jon Favreau as a creator and producer, but he will always be Monicas boyfriend Pete that wanted to become the Ultimate Fighting Champion on Friends!
