Hong Kong Disneyland is closing once again after a reported outbreak of Covid-19. The resort, which reopened on June 18, is shutting down as Hong Kong tightens it’s social-distancing measures following a rise in new cases. “As required by the government and health authorities in line with prevention efforts taking place across Hong Kong, Hong Kong Disneyland Park will temporarily close from July 15, 2020” Disney said in a statement. “The Hong Kong Disneyland Hotels will remain open with adjusted levels of services.”
The park was the second Disney Park to reopen. It’s gates opened on June 18 with limited capacity and advanced health and safety measures. It is the first park to close again due to a coronavirus outbreak. This closure comes on the tail of the Walt Disney World theme parks in Florida reopening this last weekend, despite the surging number of cases in the state. Magic Kingdom Park and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park reopened on Saturday, July 11 with EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios set to reopen on July 15, the closure date for the Hong Kong Park.
What does the Hong Kong closure mean for Orlando theme parks? Josh D’Amaro, the new Chairman of Disney Parks, says the resort is safe for guests. “We are in a new normal,” D’Amaro told reporters. “The world is a different place, but we feel really prepared to operate in this new environment”. Florida broke the U.S. record for new cases in a single day, with the states Department of Health reporting 15,299 new cases on Sunday.
