Walt Disney World Refurbishments

Walt Disney once said, “Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.” This idea carried over to all the other Disney parks and continues to be the fuel behind change. Refurbishments are an important part of this philosophy. Occasionally, Disney will fix a ride or freshen up a resort to keep the magic alive and make sure things are running smoothly. For you as the guest, knowing about Walt Disney World refurbishments when planning your next visit is crucial. You want to know which attractions and resorts might be closed. Well, here you go! This is the current refurbishment schedule for attractions and resorts.

MAGIC KINGDOM

Walt Disney World Railroad: The Walt Disney World Railroad is currently closed through a To Be Determined date, due to the construction of TRON Lightcycle Power Run.

The Hall of Presidents: The Liberty Square attraction is closed until further notice as Disney gets the animatronic of President Joe Biden, ready to join the other United States presidents.

Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover: The PeopleMover is a fan favorite at Magic Kingdom that has been closed for a long time, with the reopening date repeatedly pushed back. As of right now, the Tomorrowland attraction will be closed through Feb. 28, 2021.

Mad Tea Party: Guests wanting to get dizzy will have to take a spin on the teacups soon, because Mad Tea Party will be closed from Feb. 22 through March 4, 2021.

Swiss Family Treehouse: We know you’re all disappointed, but you won’t be able to make the climb on the Swiss Family Treehouse from March 12 through March 25, 2021.

ANIMAL KINGDOM

Kali River Rapids: This isn’t an April Fools’ Day joke. The water ride is currently closed through April 1, 2021

EPCOT

EPCOT is the park with a lot of projects still ongoing. There are no determined dates at this time. We talked more in depth about these projects in our Update On New Attractions and Entertainment post. Heavy construction continues throughout the park. Expect lots of construction walls in Future World.

Rose & Crown Dining Room is closing for refurbishment on Feb. 15. It will remain closed through early spring.

HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS

There aren’t any scheduled refurbishments for Hollywood Studios at this time.

WDW RESORT HOTELS

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort has been closed since WDW first reopened after its temporary closure due to the ongoing pandemic. We brought you the news last Fall that the original and iconic hotel will remain closed through summer 2021. Initially, the Polynesian was set to reopen on Aug. 12, 2020, which then got pushed to October 2020. But, Disney announced in late August 2020 that the resort would be undergoing an extensive refurbishment resulting in its lengthy closure. The refurbishment will add a brand new entryway design that is described as a way to “showcase the iconic mid-20th century architecture the Polynesian is famous for.” The updated entry will also have a “high-pitched, open-truss roof covered in a thatch style.”

The Monorail station at the Polynesian will also receive a makeover. You can expect the addition of new wooden screens that will be covered with geometric patterns and bright colors. Plus, the gardens and the fountains at the entrance of the resort will receive enhancements. The entryway will also feature “dramatic lighting elements, including beautiful chandeliers inspired by glass floats, fishing nets, and oversized bamboo elements.” These chandeliers will match the current one in the lobby. The Great Ceremonial House is still open for guests to enjoy select dining and shops. Also, Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows are open and accepting new reservations.

DISNEY WORLD REFURBISHMENTS

There is a silver lining in this sea of refurbishments and closures. The Rivers of America had been completely drained and construction was underway on the guide rails for the Liberty Square Riverboat. Tom Sawyer Island and the dry riverbed was also under refurbishment. The attractions were expected to reopen on March 1st, 2021. Well, the river has been refilled and both the Liberty Square Riverboat and rafts reopened on February 5th. Rides tend to close regularly for a fresh coat of paint, so don’t panic if your favorites are on the list. We’ll always let you know if a ride is getting a quick refresh, a complete refurb, or closing for good. Or you can always find the information on the Walt Disney World Day Calendar page.
